david carson:
intuition and authenticity

This project allowed me to explore the work of David Carson while refining skills in typesetting, publishing, layouts and web-design. The work of David Carson, along with grunge-style articles can be described as ‘organised mess’. They usually break the grid by experimenting with different proportions of body text and use of angles, however, this doesn’t affect hierarchical elements. It remains clear that headings, sub-headings and graphics are most important. Usually, the graphics are most important. They add visual interest by placing ragged letters in a ragged way over the top of graphics - either via intentional misalignment or inconsistent kerning, point size or casing. Body copy is always left-alight or justified.

responsive web-layout designs

To ensure consistency with the print article layout, I have translated the imagery and typefaces.

items are positioned in a ragged way and some ripped paper and grunge graphics have been applied to evoke the same tone as the magazine spread.
